The Beauty of Decay and Destruction

We often judge beauty in terms of new, fresh, innovative, young, modern, or classic. We are taught to admire certain qualities. In art, certain genres or styles take years for the art community to accept. Impressionism, modernism, abstract, cubism, dadaism, photography; just to name a few.

In this collection of photos, I have combined two subjects that interest me. The first is a portfolio of the remnants of a building that burnt to the ground. All that was left was twisted metal. Usually my photos have a very strong narrative, but these pictures lack a narrative. They are all about color, composition, and texture: the basis of modern abstract art.

The second series of photos consist of subjects I found in nature. When looking at flowers, trees, or leaves there is a beauty in each stage of their development, even if they are ravaged by pests or predators. I marvel at the workings of Nature. These photos have a narrative telling a story or asking a question.
